About
ActivityWatch is a free, open-source app that automatically tracks how you spend time on your devices, including the active application and window title, with more detail available through watchers. It includes browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox to track the active tab, editor plugins to track coding time, and category-based breakdowns for a clearer overview of your usage. The app runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.
The project emphasizes privacy: all data is stored locally on your device and is never uploaded to the cloud, in contrast to closed-source, cloud-based trackers. Users can apply it to monitoring productivity, tracking time on different projects, managing screen-time habits, measuring work-life balance, or keeping a personal log of their digital activity. Synchronization between devices is listed as a feature still in progress.
ActivityWatch is licensed under MPL-2.0 and is developed by volunteers. After installation, the app runs in the system tray and its interface can be opened at localhost:5600 in a browser. Optional paid ActivityWatch Pro subscriptions and one-time donations support ongoing development.
