Actual is a super fast, privacy-focused personal finance app built around the envelope budgeting method. Its budgets are based on your real income rather than made-up numbers, so you can only budget cash you actually have, which helps you face your real spending and see how much you save each month. It is local-first: the app works regardless of your network connection, while your data syncs in the background across all your devices. You can self-host the syncing service, and optional end-to-end encryption keeps your data unreadable even to the server.

The app offers a streamlined interface for managing transactions, including split transactions and transfers, along with bank syncing via GoCardless (EU/UK) and SimpleFIN (US/Canada). It supports importing QIF, OFX, QFX, CAMT.053 and CSV files, has a robust undo and redo system, and includes built-in YNAB4 and nYNAB importers to migrate your history. Reports include net worth and cash flow by default, plus a custom report engine. Actual also provides a dark mode that follows your system theme and a fully featured API for developers who want to build custom importers or features.
