About
Amethyst is a tiling window manager for macOS, modeled along the lines of xmonad. It is available for direct download from its releases page or via Homebrew Cask (brew install --cask amethyst), and it requires macOS 10.15 or later. After installing, you must grant it permission under Privacy & Security > Privacy > Accessibility. The site recommends disabling the macOS setting that automatically rearranges Spaces based on recent use, since it makes keyboard navigation between Spaces unpredictable.
Amethyst is controlled largely through keyboard shortcuts built on two configurable modifier combinations (mod1 and mod2, with optional mod3 and mod4). These commands mostly map to xmonad key combinations and cover actions such as cycling layouts, resizing and changing the count of the main pane, moving focus and swapping windows between panes and screens, throwing windows to numbered Spaces, and toggling floating or global tiling for a window.
Amethyst offers several window layouts that can be cycled through and individually enabled or disabled. These include Tall (a main pane with a secondary pane), Tall-Right, Wide, Two Pane, three-column layouts (Left, Middle, and Right), Widescreen-Tall, and others such as fullscreen, column, row, floating, and bsp.
