About
Avogadro is a free and open source molecular editor and visualization tool, designed for both students and advanced researchers. It is used in computational chemistry, molecular modeling, chemistry education, bioinformatics, materials science, and more, and works with molecules, crystals, biomolecules, and surfaces.
The app offers an intuitive, sleek interface for working with molecules in 3D, sketching structures for calculation input, and preparing graphics for publication. It includes a modern 3D renderer with effects such as reflections and ambient occlusion, supports animations, and provides built-in force fields that tidy up hand-drawn molecules. It can handle systems of thousands of atoms, reads a large number of file formats, and parses output from quantum chemistry programs including GAMESS, Gaussian, Molden, MOPAC, NWChem, and ORCA.
Avogadro is extensible through plugins, which can be written in Python, and is released under the BSD 3-clause license. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, with Apple Silicon support, and is available in multiple translations.
