About
Backdrop is a wallpaper app for macOS that turns your desktop and Lock Screen into animated scenes. It plays 4K video backdrops with smooth multi-display support, letting you mirror one backdrop across screens or set different ones for each display. Playlists let you schedule, shuffle, or switch backdrops based on your mood, and Advanced Search filters thousands of community-created scenes by style, color, mood, resolution, or creator.
The app is built natively for macOS and is designed to be efficient. According to the site, it uses hardware-accelerated rendering, uses less than 0.3% CPU on a MacBook Pro, and reduces resource use to extend battery life. Playback pauses automatically when apps are in fullscreen mode. Backdrop is free to download with up to 3 watermarked wallpapers and no time limit; a paid subscription or Lifetime license removes the watermark and unlocks the full community library. It requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
