About
BetterCapture is a lightweight, native macOS screen recorder that is forever free and open-source. Built with SwiftUI and ScreenCaptureKit, it lives in your menu bar for instant access, uses the native macOS Content Picker for selection, and follows Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. It supports multiple codecs, including ProRes 4444, HEVC, and H.264, offers alpha channel support for transparency, and can record system audio and microphone simultaneously. You can also exclude specific windows from recordings.
BetterCapture is designed around privacy. According to its website, it has no tracking, no analytics, and no cloud uploads, with all recordings stored locally on your Mac. No account is required to use the app, and because it is open source, its claims can be verified.
BetterCapture is MIT licensed, with no subscriptions, trials, or premium tiers. It can be installed via Homebrew (brew install bettercapture) or downloaded from GitHub, and it requires macOS 15.2 Sequoia or later.
