Bookends is a reference management app for Mac, designed for students and professionals. It lets you import references and PDFs from sources such as PubMed, Google Scholar, JSTOR, arXiv, and the Library of Congress, and offers organization tools including nested folders and groups, attachments, tag clouds, and global find/replace operations. Its PDF reader supports markup and annotations, and it can link references to related works and other applications.
For writing, Bookends integrates with Microsoft Word, Mellel, and Nisus Writer Pro, with citation inspectors and Floating Citations that let you cite while you write. It supports a range of citation formats, including Citation Style Language (CSL) styles, and can scan manuscripts to produce bibliographies and in-text citations. Libraries sync across devices through iCloud, with a companion iOS app and the option to share libraries with colleagues.
