About
BTCPayServer Vault is a Mac app (also available for Linux) that runs a simple local web server at http://127.0.0.1:65092. This server lets web applications, such as BTCPay Server, interact with a hardware wallet physically connected to your computer through the HWI command line tool. The project also includes BTCPayServer.Hwi, a library that wraps the HWI command line interface.
The Vault is designed to enable a better-integrated user experience for web applications that need hardware wallet access. Before a web application can query the hardware wallet, it must request permission, and the user must explicitly grant access. The Vault identifies the requesting application using the ORIGIN HTTP header. Once permission has been granted, the application can send requests that are passed to HWI and return the results.
According to the project, the Vault asks for user permission before allowing any web application to access the hardware wallet, so that untrusted applications cannot access public keys without consent. It can be installed via Homebrew with `brew install btcpayserver-vault`, or downloaded directly from the release page.
