About
Cantarell is a contemporary Humanist sans serif typeface family that the GNOME project used for its user interface up until the 47 release. It is distributed only as a variable font, so unlimited weight variants can be generated, and it is available as a variable OpenType font with source releases on GitLab.
The typeface was originally designed by Dave Crossland as coursework for an MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading, and was adopted by GNOME in November 2010. Over the years it received minor modifications and expansions, including a redrawn Latin version by Nikolaus Waxweiler, who redrew it in Glyphs.app.
Cantarell does not include an oblique/italic variant, which is why Google Fonts' version is not updated, and it may lack glyphs for some languages; the site directs users to its known issues list to file requests. The project is currently not under active development.
