About
Cap is an open source screen recorder for macOS with three modes: Instant, Studio, and Screenshot. Instant Mode uploads your recording while you talk, so a share link is copied to your clipboard the moment you stop. Viewers can watch in the browser without downloading or creating an account, and they can leave timestamped comments and emoji reactions on the share page. Links can be password protected, and viewer analytics are available.
Studio Mode records locally in 4K with separate screen, camera, and microphone tracks, then opens a built-in editor. Features described on the site include automatic zoom that follows the cursor, camera layouts, automatic captions transcribed on your machine, blur and pixelate for private information, backgrounds and padding, animated titles, cursor smoothing, color grading presets, trimming and speed changes, and export to MP4 or GIF at up to 4K and 60fps. Screenshot Mode captures a window or area with a hotkey, adds a styled background, and copies the result to your clipboard, with basic annotation tools available.
Every capture also gets AI-generated titles, summaries, chapters, and a searchable transcript on its share page. The site notes Cap is free to start and is available for macOS, with a Windows version also offered.
