About
Capso is an open-source screenshot and screen recording app for macOS, built natively with Swift 6.0 and SwiftUI. It is presented as a free alternative to CleanShot X and targets macOS 15.0 and later. It can be installed from GitHub Releases as a signed, notarized DMG, through Homebrew with brew install --cask capso, or built from source.
Capso offers a range of capture options, including area, fullscreen, window, scrolling, timer, OCR, and recording modes, along with an inline annotation editor for arrows, shapes, text, highlights, and pixelation. Screen recording supports MP4 and GIF output, webcam picture-in-picture, system audio and microphone capture, and a recording editor for trimming and styling. Additional features include OCR text recognition, translation of captured screen text, a persistent screenshot history, and optional cloud sharing to your own Cloudflare R2 bucket.
The project is positioned as free and open source, with its core components such as CaptureKit, AnnotationKit, and OCRKit designed as reusable Swift packages. The interface is localized into a dozen languages.
