Astah UML is a UML diagramming tool built specifically for software design. It is presented as simple to learn and use, and it supports UML 2.x diagrams including class, use case, state machine, activity, sequence, timing, communication, component, deployment, composite structure, and mind maps. Assist functions such as auto-create class diagrams, auto-layout, alignment guides, search and replace, and a map view are offered to speed up work, and diagrams can be exported to image formats, RTF, and HTML, or copied into Microsoft Office documents.

The tool can be extended through a library of plug-ins and integrations for code generation, reverse engineering of Java, C#, and C++, and exporting, along with integrations with miro, PlantUML, yUML, and Freemind. An API is also available for obtaining and modifying model information and building custom plug-ins. Version 11 and later include AI features: AI Chat Copilot for creating and refining diagrams, a local MCP server for connecting external AI agents, and AI Code Reverse for auto-generating diagrams, including sequence diagrams.

Astah UML is offered in free trial and student licensing options, with a Faculty Site License for universities and team options for development groups. For users who need more, Astah Pro adds ER diagrams, flowcharts, requirement diagrams, collaborative modeling for larger teams, multi-language model names, and perpetual and academic licensing options.
