About
CotEditor is a free plain-text editor made specifically for macOS, designed to look and behave like a native Mac application. It launches quickly so you can start writing right away, and it is developed as an open-source project that anyone can contribute to.
The app offers syntax highlighting for more than 60 pre-installed languages, including HTML, PHP, Python, Ruby, and Markdown, with the option to create your own settings. Its find and replace feature uses the ICU regular expression engine, and settings, syntax definitions, and themes can be adjusted from a standard settings window rather than complex configuration files. Other features include automatic backups of documents while editing, an outline menu for jumping to lines, a split editor for viewing multiple parts of a document, and a character inspector that displays Unicode data for selected characters.
For advanced users, CotEditor supports scripting in languages such as Python, Ruby, Perl, PHP, UNIX shell, AppleScript, and JavaScript. It can also flag characters that cannot be converted to a chosen encoding, estimate file encodings, and offers a vertical text mode with correct line height for CJK languages.
