About
Deadbolt is an encryption app that simplifies encrypting and decrypting files: all you need is a password. It works across laptops and desktops, with downloads available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and encrypted files can be shared between these platforms. The app is available as a graphical desktop app, where you select a file or folder, enter a password, and encrypt it, with decryption being just as easy. A command-line interface is also available for encrypting and decrypting files without the GUI, and it can prompt for a password securely if one isn't provided.
Deadbolt uses AES-256-GCM for encryption and argon2id for password hashing, with the integrity of encrypted data verified by AES-GCM's authentication tag. Encrypted files include a version header so that the cryptographic format can be improved while maintaining backwards compatibility; newer files use the argon2id-based format, while older files use PBKDF2-SHA512.
