About
DesignCraft is an open-source page layout and publishing app, rebuilt in pure Rust, that runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and the web. It offers the layout tools you would expect, including spreads and parent pages, threaded stories, paragraph and character styles, swatches and text wrap. It is free, with no subscription, no licence server and no telemetry.
For typography, DesignCraft uses a Knuth–Plass paragraph composer, dictionary hyphenation, optical margin alignment and baseline grids, with line breaks that match on screen and in PDF. Its print output includes selectable text with embedded fonts, CMYK and spot colours, bleed, crop marks and archival PDF/A files. Rendering is multithreaded and uses SIMD, with copy-on-write documents, instant undo and cached composition.
DesignCraft saves to a documented native format and can export PNG and exchange layouts with other tools. Every menu item, tool, panel and dialog can also be driven over a JSON control channel and an MCP server. The app is currently in development, and version 0.13.0 is available as a Universal macOS disk image, along with Windows, Linux and web builds.
