About
Dictionaries is a Mac app that brings bidirectional translation, spellchecking, and pronunciation audio for over 80 languages into macOS. Its translations are based on large Wiktionary-derived dictionaries, and you can look up any selectable word in most apps, including text editors, web browsers, and Spotlight, using the system's Look Up feature. Because it integrates deeply with macOS text processing, the same translation capabilities work across apps that support it, as well as the built-in Dictionary app.
The app also keeps its dictionaries up to date. Rather than relying on a printed dictionary that goes out of date, you can launch Dictionaries occasionally and all installed dictionaries will update automatically. If macOS doesn't already include a spellchecking dictionary, Dictionaries installs one to help catch mistakes, and it provides pronunciation audio recordings for most words, which also play from Look Up.
Dictionaries is available as a free download for macOS 10.15 and later, with a paid option to buy the app. The website notes that it is a time-unlimited trial and includes extras such as Emojipedia emoji explanations.
