About
ELAN is an annotation tool for audio and video recordings. With it, a user can add an unlimited number of textual annotations to audio and/or video media. An annotation can be a sentence, word or gloss, a comment, a translation, or a description of any feature observed in the media. Annotations can be created on multiple layers called tiers, and tiers can be hierarchically interconnected. An annotation can either be time-aligned to the media or refer to other existing annotations. Annotation content is Unicode text, and annotation documents are stored in an XML format (EAF).
ELAN provides several ways to view the annotations, each connected to and synchronized with the media timeline. It supports creating multiple tiers and tier hierarchies, supports Controlled Vocabularies, and allows linking of up to four video files to an annotation document. Media playback builds on existing native media frameworks such as Windows Media Player, QuickTime, or VLC, so supported audio and video formats depend on the operating system, though high-performance playback can usually be achieved.
ELAN is written in Java and distributed for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is open source, with its sources available under the GPL 3 license.
