About
Express Scribe is an audio player designed to help transcribe audio recordings on PC or Mac. It lets you speed up turnaround time with keyboard hotkeys or a supported transcribing foot pedal, and it offers variable speed playback, multi-channel control, a video player, and file management. The site notes that the software works with word processors such as Microsoft Word, so you can type transcriptions while controlling playback in the background.
The software supports more than 45 audio and video formats, including MP3, M4A, DSS, and WAV, and can load recordings from hand-held recorders, FTP, email, a local network, or CD audio. It can also automatically check a folder, server, or network path for new dictations at set intervals and send finished transcriptions to clients. It is compatible with several USB foot pedals and works with speech recognition software and the FastFox text expander.
Express Scribe is offered as a free version that supports common formats such as WAV, MP3, WMA, and DCT, with a Pro edition that adds proprietary format support and certain hardware compatibility. The site lists macOS 10.5 or later as the requirement for the Mac version, along with a sound card and optional foot pedal, speech engine, and internet connection for automatic file reception.
