About
FreePDF is a free PDF reader for macOS (Apple Silicon/ARM64) that supports translating PDF documents, including academic literature written in various languages, into Chinese. The project is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license and is also available for Windows.
The app translates PDFs page by page, updating the preview as each page completes. Translation engines include Bing (default), Google, SiliconFlow, Ollama for local models, and custom OpenAI-compatible APIs, with support for translating between Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, and Traditional Chinese. Output can be exported as a translated PDF, a side-by-side bilingual version, or translated-only. If translation is interrupted, completed pages remain readable and translation can be resumed later.
The website also describes an optional question-answering feature that lets users ask questions about a document's content using a large language model, configured through SiliconFlow, Ollama, or a custom API. The text notes limitations: scanned image-based PDFs are not supported, tables are not translated in the main branch, and small local models may not follow translation instructions reliably.
