About
Freeplane is a free and open source application for mind mapping, also known as concept mapping or information mapping, that supports thinking, sharing information, and getting work, school, and home tasks done. It provides tools for creating mind maps and navigating the information they contain. According to the website, its capabilities appeal to power users, while typical users can also use it as a more robust alternative to tools such as Xmind and Mindmeister.
Freeplane is written in Java using OSGi and Java Swing, and runs on any operating system with a current version of Java installed. It can be run locally or portably from removable storage such as a USB drive. The website directs users to Sourceforge for downloads, along with a guide to distributions and Java runtimes, and links to a change log, an issue tracker for bug reports, and a Discussions forum for questions and ideas. Contributors are welcome.
The website also credits the YourKit Java Profiler, used by the Freeplane team to analyze memory consumption and performance, and the Weblate translation management system, developed and hosted by Michal Čihař.
