About
GitHub Copilot for Xcode is an AI coding assistant for Swift, Objective-C, and iOS/macOS development. It offers code completions, in which suggestions appear as you write code or from a natural language comment describing what you want, along with Chat for answering coding questions and Code Review. The website also highlights Agent Mode, which can edit files in your codebase, run terminal commands and show their output, search your project for relevant files and code, create new files and directories, and run Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools you have configured.
The app requires macOS 13 or later, Xcode 14 or later, and a GitHub account. It can be installed with Homebrew (brew install --cask github-copilot-for-xcode) or from the latest release DMG, and it can update itself. Setup requires three permissions: Background, Accessibility, and Xcode Source Editor Extension. The Source Editor Extension must be enabled manually from the app's settings, after which the GitHub Copilot menu appears under Xcode's Editor menu.
To use it, sign in through the app's settings: a browser window opens and a code is copied to your clipboard, which you paste into the GitHub login page to authorize the application. The site also notes that version 0.50.0 or later is recommended to be compatible with upcoming usage-based billing, though older versions will continue to function.
