Publish or Perish is a software program that retrieves and analyzes academic citations. It draws on a variety of data sources to obtain raw citations, then calculates citation metrics, including the number of papers, total citations, and the h-index. The software is designed to help individual academics present their research impact to its best advantage, even if they have very few citations. It can support applications for tenure, promotion, or a new job, as well as preparation for a performance appraisal. Users can also use it to decide which journals to submit to, prepare for a job interview, conduct a literature review, do bibliometric research, or write laudatios or obituaries.

Publish or Perish is available as a macOS application, as well as a Microsoft Windows application, and the website provides download and installation instructions for each. Downloading and using the software is free, although the developer accepts optional donations to support hosting, bandwidth, and development.
