HazeOver is a Mac app that automatically highlights the active window by dimming background windows. It is designed for people who are easily distracted, who have too many windows open, who work on large displays, or who get lost across multiple monitors. Instead of minimizing, closing, or hiding windows, you can keep your workspace as it is and instantly see which window is active. The app also helps reduce eye strain and glare, complements Dark Mode, and can lower interface brightness at night without sacrificing the legibility or color accuracy of the active window.

You can customize the dimming intensity and animation speed, from a soft shade to a bold dark background. Separate dimming settings can be used for Dark and Light appearance. Dimming can be toggled with a keyboard shortcut or adjusted with a gesture, and pressing the Fn key temporarily turns off dimming while you drag between apps. HazeOver can also be controlled or automated with the Shortcuts app, Focus filters, and AppleScript.

HazeOver requires macOS Ventura 13 or later, and the website states it is compatible with macOS 27 Golden Gate. A free trial is available, and the app can also be tried through Setapp.
