About
Headroom is a Mac menu bar app that reduces the token usage of Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex by compressing the bulky tool output, logs, and boilerplate that consume tokens in each prompt. According to the site, this can unlock up to 2x as much usage on your existing plan. All optimization runs locally, so prompts and code never leave your machine, and the app is self-contained so it doesn't interfere with your project packages. Compression is reversible, so the model can still reach any original content it needs.
The site reports that savings depend on the content: JSON results, logs, and long documents compress roughly 50% or more, while source code passes through unchanged. Across 183 Claude Code users in one week of production traffic, input fell 34% and output fell 33%, and the site notes that actual savings are not guaranteed. It also presents accuracy checks showing compressed results matching uncompressed baselines on several benchmarks.
Headroom offers optional add-ons for further savings, including RTK for terminal output, MarkItDown for converting PDFs and Office documents, Serena and Codebase Memory for targeted code lookup, Context7 for library documentation, and Ponytail and Caveman for steering the model toward more concise output. A 7-day free trial is available with no credit card required.
