About
Highball is a free, open source native macOS app and CLI that runs Windows games on Apple Silicon. It sets up Wine, DXMT, D3DMetal and DXVK for you, installs Steam or connects your Epic library, and reports honestly which games run, which don't, and which renderer to use. Its verdicts come from an open, CC0 compatibility database that includes verified runs, per-game renderer verdicts, and a kernel-anti-cheat blocklist, with provenance on every claim. Highball requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later, and can be installed from a notarized .dmg or with Homebrew.
The app is in beta and works end to end, from one-button setup through Steam login to launching a game, with the graphics mode chosen per game from the database. Renderer switching, 32-bit apps, Windows runtimes, ReShade, and Epic libraries via Legendary are also supported. Launcher support varies: Steam and Epic work on the default engine, Rockstar signs in and runs GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 with Highball's Wine 11 engine, and the EA app signs in and runs The Sims 4. Ubisoft Connect and Battle.net show sign-in windows but no game has yet been played through them, and GOG Galaxy does not currently sign in. Everything Highball installs lives in ~/Library/Application Support/Highball/, so deleting that folder fully uninstalls it. The first run is slow because of large engine and Steam downloads.
