About
HoudahSpot is an advanced file search app for macOS that builds on Spotlight indexing to help you find documents, correspondence, photos, and other files quickly. You can start with a simple search, then refine it by adding and combining criteria such as name, text content, file extension, tags, date, file size, resolution, and author. Boolean operator groups let you match any, all, or none of the criteria in a group, and text searches support words, prefixes, exact phrases, and wildcards.
HoudahSpot also gives you control over where you search. You can search several folders at once, include or exclude specific subfolders, and customize the results display with hundreds of available columns, sorting, and grouping options. Preview tools such as Quick Look, Text Preview, and the Info pane let you check files and their metadata before opening them. Saved templates and default window setups help you repeat recurring searches.
The app is aimed at professionals and power users who work with large numbers of files and have outgrown Finder and Spotlight. HoudahSpot 6.6 requires macOS 10.14 Mojave or newer with Spotlight indexing enabled, and it runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. A free trial is available.
