About
jGRASP is a lightweight integrated development environment built specifically to automatically generate software visualizations that improve software comprehensibility. Implemented in Java, it runs on any platform with a Java Virtual Machine (Java 11 or higher). It produces Control Structure Diagrams for Java, C, C++, Objective-C, Python, Ada, VHDL, and Kotlin; Complexity Profile Graphs for Java and Ada; and UML class diagrams for Java. For Java, it also provides dynamic object viewers and a viewer canvas that work with an integrated debugger and workbench, including a data structure identifier that presents objects such as stacks, queues, linked lists, binary trees, and hash tables in a textbook-like view.
Recent releases add JUnit 4 support for Kotlin, Python 3 debugging and viewers, and REPL interactions for Python. Accessibility improvements include keyboard navigation and accessible text information for viewers, with the developers stating that the latest version is fully WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliant to their knowledge. Plugins for IntelliJ (IDEA and Android Studio) and Eclipse bring the viewer and canvas features into those IDEs. The Python debugger is described as functional but not yet complete, and the Python debugger has only been tested under CPython 3.12 or higher.
jGRASP is developed by the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Auburn University. The website does not specifically describe a Mac-specific build, so Mac compatibility is assumed only through its Java-based platform support.
