About
Julia is a high-performance programming language that automatically compiles programs to efficient native code via LLVM, while still feeling dynamic and scriptable with good support for interactive use. It uses multiple dispatch as its core paradigm, which makes it easy to express many object-oriented and functional programming patterns, and it provides features such as asynchronous I/O, metaprogramming, debugging, logging, profiling, a package manager, and the ability to build binaries.
The language includes conveniences such as comprehensions, broadcasting, piping and function composition, Unicode and math notation, multi-threading, and a built-in REPL with package, shell, and help modes. Julia also offers code introspection tools and reproducible environments that can be recreated across platforms using pre-built binaries. Packages can be installed easily from a registry.
Julia is open source under the MIT license, with over 1,000 contributors and source code on GitHub. The website describes its use for building applications, interoperating with C, Fortran, Python, R and other languages, and parallel and GPU computing, as well as machine learning and scientific domains.
