About
KeyboardCleanTool locks your keyboard, including modifier keys and the Touch Bar, and can optionally lock your trackpad and mouse. This lets you wipe them without producing any input. Version 8 is a complete rewrite. It darkens all screens so smudges are easier to see, shows a status card with the elapsed time, prevents display sleep while you clean, and can unlock automatically after a timer.
There is deliberately no keyboard shortcut to unlock. Instead, you press and hold a trackpad or mouse button for a few seconds. The app is free and requires macOS 13 or later, with automatic updates via Sparkle. If you cannot update, KeyboardCleanTool 7 is the older, simpler version. It offers keyboard and Touch Bar lock only and runs on macOS 10.11 through macOS 12.
KeyboardCleanTool is a free side project of BetterTouchTool, an app for customizing keyboards, trackpads, mice, and other input devices on the Mac. The developer notes that Apple rejected the app for the Mac App Store in 2011 as "not useful," and that they still use it every week. They have also heard of people using it to let toddlers and cats play at using a computer.
