About
KeyCastr is an open-source keystroke visualizer for the Mac. It lets you share your keystrokes when creating screencasts, presenting, or collaborating with others. You can choose to display command keys, all modified keys, or all keystrokes, and you can also include mouse clicks. Developers can build their own visualizer on top of KeyCastr.
You can download the latest release from GitHub or install it with Homebrew using brew install --cask keycastr. KeyCastr needs permission to receive events from macOS. On macOS 10.15 and later, enable it under Input Monitoring in Security & Privacy. On older versions, or if the app doesn't appear there, you can add it under Accessibility. By default, keystrokes appear at the bottom left of your display, and you can move them by dragging the text.
KeyCastr is completely free and open source. Apart from the Sparkle framework used for application updates, it does not use any networking. It will not display your passwords as long as the website or app treats password entry as secure, such as an input type of password. Because any app in the Accessibility or Input Monitoring lists can receive all your input, the site recommends reviewing those lists and removing apps you don't need. KeyCastr has been freely available for the Mac since 2009.
