About
LibreOffice is an open source office suite offering six tools: Writer, a word processor for everything from quick notes to full-length books; Calc, a spreadsheet for analyzing data, crunching numbers, and creating clear visuals; and Impress, for creating multimedia presentations. The suite also includes Draw, for designing everything from simple diagrams to complex 3D illustrations; Base, for managing databases, including building tables, forms, queries, and reports; and Math, for writing mathematical formulas with a visual editor or plain text.
LibreOffice is free to use, and it is developed by a community of hundreds of contributors around the world who work on design, localisation, documentation, development, and quality assurance. Because it is open source, anyone can study how it works and suggest improvements. The software is available in many languages, and the community encourages translation and maintenance in all of them.
The website notes that LibreOffice 26.8 has been released and describes the software as tested and used daily by a large user community. Reviews quoted on the site compare it favorably to Microsoft Office, with ZDNET calling it "every bit as good as Microsoft Office and free to boot."
