About
MacDown 3000 is a free, lightweight Markdown editor for macOS. It continues the MacDown Free Software project, which itself followed Chen Luo's Mou. It is a universal binary optimized for Apple Silicon that also runs on Intel Macs, and it requires macOS 11.0 or later. You can see your Markdown rendered as you type, and you can export documents to HTML or PDF. Markdown is converted to HTML using Hoedown, with support for CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown. Code blocks get syntax highlighting via Prism. Other supported features include TeX-style math notation, GFM task lists, and Jekyll front-matter. Auto-completion handles bracket and quote pairing, list continuation, and formatting shortcuts, and you can customize it or turn it off. Rendering options are set in Preferences.
MacDown 3000 is released under the MIT License, and contributions are welcome through its GitHub repository. Stable and beta builds are available for download, and it can also be installed with Homebrew using `brew install --cask macdown-3000`. The project's stated focus is a regular release cadence, stability, bug fixes, and support for modern Markdown styling. Donations help cover the Apple developer license cost.
