About
MacParakeet is a Mac app for local speech recognition. Press your hotkey to dictate text into any app or text field on macOS. Drop in an audio or video file, or paste a link from YouTube, Loom, Vimeo, or a podcast, to get a transcript. It can also record meetings by capturing system audio and your mic at the same time, with a live transcript and notes you can type during the call.
Core speech recognition runs on your Apple Silicon chip, with no cloud speech-to-text servers and no accounts required. The app supports 98 languages, offers speaker diarization, custom vocabulary, and eight export formats including TXT, Markdown, SRT, VTT, DOCX, PDF, JSON, and DAPT. Optional AI features can connect to providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, or LM Studio, and send only transcript text, and only when you choose a provider.
MacParakeet is free and open-source under GPL-3.0, with no paid tier, and its source code is on GitHub. It requires macOS 14.2 or later and Apple Silicon, and can be installed with Homebrew or downloaded directly.
