About
macshot is an open-source screenshot and screen recording tool for macOS that lives in your menu bar. Press Cmd+Shift+X, drag to select a region, annotate with the toolbar, and press Cmd+C to copy. The app offers 19+ annotation tools, including arrows, shapes, text, pencil and marker, numbered markers, stamps and emoji, a pixel ruler, a magnifier loupe, and a color sampler. Its censor tool can pixelate, blur, fill, or smart-erase content, and it can auto-redact PII such as emails, phone numbers, credit card numbers, SSNs, and API keys.
Beyond still captures, macshot can record any area or the full screen as MP4 or GIF, with system audio and microphone input. A built-in editor lets you trim and export recordings without leaving the app. Scroll capture stitches a region into one tall or wide image, and OCR with translation is also supported. You can upload captures to Google Drive, imgbb, or any S3-compatible service such as Cloudflare R2, AWS S3, or MinIO, with the link copied to your clipboard.
macshot is built with Swift and AppKit rather than Electron, and it is licensed under GPL-3.0 with no subscription. It supports 40 languages and detects your system language automatically. You can install it with Homebrew using `brew install --cask macshot`, or download the .dmg from the Releases page.
