About
macSKK is a Japanese input method (日本語入力システム) for macOS that uses the SKK input method. It requires macOS 13.3 (Ventura) or later and is built as a Universal Binary, though the developer has only tested it on Apple Silicon. Although AquaSKK already offers SKK input on macOS, macSKK was developed to add its own original features. Its planned features include multiple dictionaries, a private mode that doesn't save to My Dictionary, and per-app settings for direct input.
Because input methods handle sensitive information such as passwords, macSKK uses the macOS App Sandbox to restrict network communication and file access, which the developer says reduces damage if a security hole is attacked. It uses no third-party libraries, and the code is written only in Swift, with Combine for event handling and SwiftUI for the user interface. Since key-input state changes such as word registration mode and okurigana input are complex, the project includes unit tests to reduce the risk of introducing bugs.
macSKK is distributed as a notarized application through GitHub Releases, and it can also be installed with Homebrew Cask using `brew install --cask macskk`. The project is free software licensed under GPL-3.0 or later. Detailed installation steps, dictionary setup, and FAQs are available on the project's documentation site.
