About
MacTeX is a package that installs TeX Live, the standard distribution of TeX, LaTeX, and related programs, on the Macintosh. It is notarized by Apple, uses Apple's standard install technology, contains native code for both Intel and Arm processors, and is fully configured and ready to use once installation is complete. The full MacTeX package includes essentially all software available for typesetting with TeX-like systems, such as TeX, LaTeX, XeTeX, LuaTeX, and ConTeXt, and supports almost every written language in use today. A smaller companion, BasicTeX (about 140 MB), is capable of typesetting standard TeX and LaTeX documents and can coexist with MacTeX on the same machine.
The full install includes a GUI-Applications subpackage that places TeXShop, TeX Live Utility, LaTeXiT, BibDesk, and hintView in /Applications/TeX. TeX Live Utility is used to keep the distribution up to date and to switch between installed TeX Live versions. MacTeX requires macOS 11 (Big Sur) or higher, and the website also describes a Unix install script option for older systems and older versions of MacTeX for earlier macOS releases.
