About
MarkEdit is a free, open-source Markdown editor for macOS. It describes itself as just like TextEdit on Mac but dedicated to Markdown, and its installer is about 4 MB. It is privacy-focused and doesn't collect any user data. It has native macOS aesthetics and supports Shortcuts and AppleScript. It launches quickly and can edit million-line files easily.
MarkEdit strictly follows the GFM specification, with no proprietary syntax or invented features. Complex editing, such as multi-caret and code folding, is built on CodeMirror 6. Its UI controls remain native to macOS, including force-touch word lookup, inline predictions, and Writing Tools. Customization is built around CSS, JavaScript, and CodeMirror extensions, and a built-in extension manager offers curated official extensions for previewing Markdown, hiding syntax, customizing themes, writing with AI, and editing tables visually.
MarkEdit can be installed by downloading the DMG from the latest release or via Homebrew with `brew install --cask markedit`. It checks for updates automatically. The project is MIT licensed, and the developers say they keep it for their own daily use and ship it openly in case it helps others with the same needs.
