About
MiaoYan is a Markdown notes app for Mac, iPhone and iPad. You edit plain Markdown with syntax highlighting, switch to a typeset preview, or use split mode to work side by side, with real-time preview and 60fps bidirectional scroll sync. A three-column layout keeps folders, notes and writing together. You can also turn a note into slides, since Markdown presentations are split with ---. Wikilinks and backlinks, LaTeX, Mermaid, version history, auto-formatting and a CLI are included.
Notes are stored as plain .md files in a folder you choose, and MiaoYan does not collect note data. Sync is handled by iCloud Drive, Nutstore or another file-sync client. The Mac app is free and open source, installable with Homebrew or from GitHub Releases. The App Store version, a one-time purchase covering Mac, iPhone and iPad on the same Apple account, adds iPhone and iPad apps that open the same iCloud Drive folder, with updates delivered automatically.
MiaoYan is built natively with Swift 6 rather than Electron, and it does not center on a plugin ecosystem. It requires macOS 12 or later on the Mac, and iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later on iPhone and iPad.
