About
Visual Studio Code is an open source platform for writing code by hand or out loud, running it in the terminal, checking it in the browser, or delegating your backlog to an agent. It supports writing, debugging, testing, and refactoring code with rich language support, precise navigation, and integrated debuggers. JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS work out of the box, and language extensions add IntelliSense, linting, and debugging for languages such as Python, Java, and C++. Users can browse extensions in the Visual Studio Marketplace, choose a theme and keyboard shortcuts, and arrange their layout.
VS Code includes agent features: you can build alongside agents that understand your codebase, work through a plan, and review results in the editor, or coordinate teams of agents working in parallel across repositories. You can choose from models by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and open-weight providers, or bring your own key, and use the Copilot, Claude, or Codex agent harness. Work can continue across surfaces, including GitHub Mobile and the Copilot CLI.
VS Code runs on macOS, along with Windows and Linux, or in the browser at vscode.dev. Remote development is supported through containers, SSH, and WSL. The project is developed in the open, with a public roadmap, iteration plans, and issues, and it has over 3,000 contributors.
