About
Mints is a growing collection of tools for macOS that provides tailor-made log extracts for investigating problems and exploring the system, collates information about a Mac that can be difficult to find elsewhere, performs a set of tests on Spotlight, and offers specialist tools for certain types of data. It is aimed primarily at advanced users, system administrators, support staff, and developers, though its tools are simple to use. It is supplied as a Universal App, with versions for Big Sur through Golden Gate, and for earlier releases on High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Sierra.
The app's features are available from buttons on its main window, the Visual Look Up command in the Window menu, and commands in the Data section of the Window menu. Each log window works the same way: you set the time period relative to local time and click Get log, and Mints fetches only the entries relevant to that topic, colour-coding them by subsystem. Mints must be run from an admin user account to reliably obtain log extracts, since the latest versions display an explanatory alert and quit when the current user isn't in the admin group. Because Info-level entries are progressively removed from the log, the site advises collecting extracts as soon as possible after a test or event. Version 1.22 adds locale and language setting information and is compatible with macOS 27 Golden Gate. One known issue is that the Spotlight/Check Search window can sometimes show multiple windows after several tests in one session; these are closed by hand.
