Monal is an XMPP instant messaging client for macOS and iOS that aims to be the go-to client for these platforms, much as Conversations IM is for Android. XMPP is an open, standardized protocol for real-time communication. Anyone can host their own server and communicate freely with others, and addresses take the form user@domain.tld, much like email.
With Monal, a user can work with different apps and services from a single account or from multiple accounts. The client implements various XEP standards (XMPP extension protocols) that add modern functionality to the XMPP core and IM RFCs. Monal is designed for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, with the goal that things look and work the way users expect.
Monal is developed under an open-source BSD license. The project states that it does not sell or track information for external parties or anyone else. The development is on GitHub.
