About
MongoDB Compass is a free, desktop GUI tool that lets builders explore their data, run queries and aggregations, and refine their data models through a visual interface. It samples and analyzes documents to show metadata on collections, such as date ranges and frequent values, which helps identify patterns and issues like missing fields or inconsistent data types. Its built-in query bar supports filtering with query operators, sampling, sorting, and modifying results, and can generate queries from natural language.
Compass also helps optimize performance. Users can add new indexes and remove underperforming ones, monitor real-time server and database metrics such as query execution times, document counts, and index usage, and investigate issues with the visual Explain Plan. Its aggregation pipeline builder lets users add sequential stages and preview data as it moves through each phase, making it easier to extract insights like yearly regional revenue or user churn. Compass can be used throughout the development lifecycle, and it supports importing and exporting data for testing.
