About
The Monotype Desktop App works alongside the Monotype Fonts web platform to simplify font management. It syncs your selected fonts from the Monotype Fonts portal to your workstation, where they can be used in most applications. The app also casts fonts into major creative applications, so creators spend less time searching for missing fonts or manually downloading and installing font files.
The app includes built-in plugins that automatically detect missing fonts in your creative projects when you open a design file. It then looks for them in Monotype's library of 250,000 fonts (or more if your team manages third-party fonts through Monotype Fonts), casts them onto the application you're using, and prompts you to install them. Its main functions include syncing and unsyncing fonts for your Monotype workspaces, keeping fonts activated and usable in your operating system, and managing downloaded, shared, imported, and synced fonts.
Syncing is the preferred way to access Monotype Fonts because it tracks font use by individual user accounts, which simplifies utilization tracking, security, and compliance. Downloading remains an option for offline workstations or developer environments where syncing isn't possible. On a Mac, the app's uninstaller is located at /Applications/Monotype Fonts/uninstall.app.
