About
MountMate is a free, open source Mac app for managing external drives from the menu bar, without opening Disk Utility or Terminal. It can mount and unmount volumes, auto-mount SMB and NFS network shares at login, and show how much space is used and free on mounted shares. Keep Alive reconnects shares and volumes after a dropped connection, a network change, or wake. Drives can be unmounted before the Mac sleeps and mounted again on wake, or unmounted after 1 to 60 minutes without read or write activity. The app also supports Shortcuts, Siri, and global keyboard shortcuts, unlocks encrypted APFS volumes with optional Keychain password saving, and can mount volumes read-only to protect backups or inspect damaged drives.
MountMate also includes safety and convenience features. An "Almost full" badge appears when a mounted volume reaches 80%, 90%, or 95% used, with an optional notification. A disk whose SMART status reports "Failing" gets a red warning next to its name. Selected USB disks can be blocked from auto-mounting at plug-in or login, and an Eject All External Disks button, shortcut, or Shortcuts action unmounts and ejects every external disk so they can be unplugged.
MountMate requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and is a native menu bar app, not an Electron app. It states that it has no tracking or data collection, and its only network use is checking for updates through Sparkle, which can be turned off in Settings. It does not add NTFS write support. It can be installed from the latest disk image on GitHub Releases or with Homebrew using brew install mountmate.
