About
Music Decoy stops the macOS Music app from launching whenever you press the ▶ Play key. While the app is running, the system Music app won't launch by accident. Music Decoy does no work in the background. It works by existing as a running process that uses the same bundle identifier as the Music app (com.apple.Music), which makes the system think Music is already running.
The app can also be set to launch a different media app when Play is pressed, starting with v1.1. For example, you can run `defaults write com.lowtechguys.MusicDecoy mediaAppPath /Applications/Spotify.app` in Terminal, and reset it with `defaults delete com.lowtechguys.MusicDecoy mediaAppPath`. Music can still launch itself when you press Play with no other app playing audio, when a Bluetooth headset connects and sends a play command, or when a call ends and the headset switches from call mode to music mode.
The app has no Dock or menu bar icon. To quit it, open Activity Monitor, select Music Decoy, and press the ❌ button at the top, or run `killall 'Music Decoy'` in Terminal. The app can be installed with `brew install music-decoy`.
