About
The new MySQL Workbench is the next generation of the unified visual tool for MySQL developers, DBAs, and architects. Built on the MySQL Shell foundation, it brings SQL, JavaScript, and TypeScript development, database administration, and analysis together in a modern, extensible desktop application. It replaces earlier MySQL Workbench releases, which have reached end of life, as well as MySQL Shell for VS Code, which has been discontinued.
For development, you can write and execute SQL in the Script Editor or document exploratory work in SQL Notebooks, where SQL can be combined with JavaScript and TypeScript. For administration, it lets you view server status and configuration, manage users and grants, and investigate client connections. For analysis, Performance Reports help investigate slow queries, statement execution-time distribution, table sizes, memory use, and waits, while Visual Explain and Visual Explain Analyze show how MySQL will execute a query and compare the plan with runtime behavior.
Workbench also supports backup and migration, with MySQL Enterprise Backup integration for visual full and incremental backup, scheduling, and restore workflows, and the HeatWave Migration Assistant for guiding migrations to OCI. Workbench is extensible, and GUI plugin examples are available for building your own workflows.
