About
Nimble Commander is a free and open source dual-pane file manager for Mac, built with a classic design and familiar Mac swiftness. It is written mostly in C++ and aims to use the minimum of system resources, while offering quick keyboard access to file management operations through shortcuts for more than a hundred actions. It is aimed at software developers, system administrators, IT professionals, and enthusiasts.
The app covers a broad set of everyday and advanced tasks. Users can search for files by attributes or content, using custom search or Spotlight, and open the built-in viewer for textual or hexadecimal views, even for multi-gigabyte files. The Batch Rename tool supports patterns, date and time insertion, search and replace, counters, and letter case changes. A built-in UNIX terminal stays in sync with the file panels, and users can browse archives like folders and create Zip archives. Nimble Commander also connects to FTP, SFTP, and WebDAV servers, and includes tools for system information, file attribute and tag editing, and hard and symbolic link management.
Nimble Commander can be customized in many ways, including colors, fonts, presentation types, external tools, terminal position, and hotkeys. An admin mode grants root access within the same panels after asking for administrator credentials, and a Classic Presentation offers a traditional monospaced layout. The app requires macOS 11 or later.
