About
Notenik is a free, open-source note-taking app built for the Mac and ready for Apple silicon. It has no upfront cost, in-app purchases, subscriptions, or advertising, and its source code is published under the MIT license and available on GitHub. Notes are stored as plain text files that can be opened in any text editor or Markdown editor, and they are collected into folders that you can keep anywhere, syncing them with cloud or other services as you prefer.
Beyond basic note-taking, Notenik supports Markdown with footnotes, citations, definition lists, and MathJax, plus wiki-style double bracket links between notes and automatic Table of Contents generation. Each note consists of customizable fields such as Title, Body, Tags, Link, Date, Seq, and Author, and collections can use different field sets and be sorted by any of them. The app also offers import and export, publishing and sharing options, a custom URL scheme, HTML generation in predetermined or custom designs, and scripts and templates for sorting, filtering, and generating websites.
Notenik is documented in its own Knowledge Base, accessible from the Help menu or on the Web, and the developer provides a Discourse forum for user feedback and regularly publishes updates. Reviewers have described its interface as familiar yet flexible, clean, and easy to use, though its many customization options can feel intimidating at first.
