About
Notepad.exe is a lightweight Mac code editor for quick experiments. Open a blank note or file and run Swift, Python, JavaScript, Go, or Rust without creating a project. It writes the same code you would write by hand, so you can read, edit, and learn from it. The app is free, requires no account, and runs on macOS 15.6 or later as a Universal binary.
As an idea grows, you can stay in the same editor. You can add Swift packages, Python requirements, JavaScript dependencies, and Go modules, and test code on Mac and Linux. For UI work, you can run SwiftUI and UIKit templates in the iOS Simulator beside the source, though the Simulator still requires Xcode. When a experiment is worth keeping, you can distribute a macOS Swift note as a local Mac app.
Notepad.exe also helps you organize and share your work. You can search the Notes Library, tag notes, pin scratch windows above other apps, and export polished code images. For the built-in assistant, you can choose On-Device Model, which stays on the Mac, or Notepad AI, ChatGPT, or Claude, which send conversations through Cloudflare.
