About
nvALT is a fork of the original Notational Velocity, developed by Elastic Threads (David Halter) and Brett Terpstra, and available for free with optional donations. It is designed for taking notes quickly with just the keyboard: you press a shortcut, start typing, and the app searches existing notes as you type, letting you select a note or create a new one by entering a unique title. Notes support features such as [[double-bracket]] wiki links, tags synced to Dropbox and searchable via Spotlight, TaskPaper-compatible strikethrough with the @done tag, and automatic list formatting.
nvALT adds features on top of the original, including Apex and MultiMarkdown support with a Preview window (including an HTML source tab), Simplenote login, note publishing via Marked Share, auto-pairing of brackets and quotes, the ability to pin a note to the preview, right-to-left support, and improved external editor support. Interface options include horizontal layout, full-screen mode, optional menubar modes, several color schemes, and a word count. The Preview window's HTML and CSS templates can be customized.
The website notes that a new app, nvUltra, is coming to replace nvALT, and that bug reports and feature requests should be filed on GitHub. It also states that the current build is not well tested for PowerPC Macs, so PPC users are advised to use it experimentally.
